How To: Print & Assemble PDF Sewing Patterns

Whether you’re new to sewing or a seasoned stitcher, using PDF patterns opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Here's a beautifully simple, step-by-step guide for printing and assembling your digital sewing patterns at home.

Step 1: Download the Pattern

  • A Print-at-Home PDF (for Letter/A4 printers)
  • A Copy Shop File (for large format printing)
  • A Projector File (optional)
  • A Sewing Instructions Booklet

🔹 Save these files in a dedicated folder and back them up in cloud storage.

Step 2: Print the Test Page

Start by printing the test page (usually Page 1). This verifies your printer is scaling the pattern accurately.

  • Scale: 100% or "Actual Size"
  • Orientation: Auto
  • Color: Black & White (optional)

🔹 Use a ruler to check the test square (usually 1" x 1" or 4cm x 4cm). If it’s off, adjust and reprint.

Step 3: Print the Pattern Pages

  • Print all pages of the print-at-home file
  • Use Letter or A4 paper
  • Stick with the same printer settings

🔹 Tip: Use heavier weight paper for added durability.

Step 4: Cut or Fold Edges

  • Cut the right and bottom margins
  • OR fold them underneath for a faster assembly
  • Use a paper trimmer or scissors for speed and precision

  • Layout one row at a time, starting with row A
  • Align registration marks (grey circles)
  • Tape pages edge to edge
  • Repeat for the remaining rows

🔹 Use clear tape or a glue stick. Avoid shifting or bubbling.

Step 6: Cut or Trace Your Size

  • Grade between sizes if needed and cut out your size
  • Use the layers option to print only the size(s) you need
  • OR trace onto pattern paper to save the original

🔹 Highlight your size before cutting to avoid mix-ups.

Bonus Tips

  • Store assembled patterns rolled or in large envelopes
  • Label each pattern piece with its name and size
  • Consider copy shop or projector files for convenience
